The Process

Jessica Harms Process - Marilyn FinishedJessica uses a distinct style to create her paintings that goes beyond the simple technique of directly painting on canvas. Many of her paintings are layered with various literary works, images, historic materials, and other diverse media to create a piece of art that not only has a bold image but also tells a story.

Modern artists such as David Hockney, Banksy, Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, and Tim Rollins + The Kids of Survival have heavily influenced Jessica to create her own style of painting. By using specific materials and mediums to visually communicate an idea, the physical materials beneath the surface begin to tell a story of the subject matter being illustrated. In her reproduction of 'Marilyn, 1968' Jessica carefully constructed the iconic image to represent the history of pop art. First created by Andy Warhol, Jessica utilized famous artwork reproductions, text, vintage comic books, advertisements, and other well known images to build the image of Marilyn. The mixed-media painting then becomes an embodiment of the history of pop art and its impact on popular culture.

The choice of materials and media explored in her artwork is directly influenced by the subject matter of each painting. Not only does Jessica utilize layering and transparency throughout her work, she also uses other modern painting techniques to create dramatic effects. In the painting entitled 'Sydney', the client had a strong passion for urban art and stenciling. The client had also visited Australia while studying abroad and had taken the picture of Sydney Harbor during his stay. His love for urban art and traveling was combined to create his painting, incorporating spray paint and his own photography as inspiration.
